Abstract

Hybrid systems theory offers a modelling framework for power systems in which continuous dynamics interact with discrete events. This study examines the development, intellectual structure and research directions of publications applying hybrid systems theory to power system modelling. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using 797 English-language articles indexed in Scopus between 2000 and 2025. The dataset was examined through descriptive publication indicators and scientific mapping, including analyses of co-authorship, international collaboration, influential publications and keyword co-occurrence. The results indicate a generally increasing publication trend, with annual output reaching 54 articles in 2025. Publication activity was concentrated in journals specialising in automatic control and hybrid systems, reflecting the theoretical orientation of the literature. The United States and China each accounted for 24% of the geographical distribution reported in the study, while several European countries made additional contributions. Co-authorship mapping identified nine author clusters, and the country collaboration analysis identified ten clusters. Keyword co-occurrence mapping highlighted hybrid systems, hybrid automata and switched systems as prominent concepts, alongside terms associated with electrical power control, transmission and stability. Overall, the findings suggest that research in this area draws substantially on control theory while extending towards applications in electrical networks. The study provides a structured account of publication patterns and identifies opportunities to strengthen connections between theoretical modelling and power-system applications.
