Abstract
The interplay between modern fashion and traditional Zambian dress culture reflects a complex dynamic that underscores the challenges of preserving cultural heritage in a rapidly globalising world. This study explores the transformative effects of modern fashion trends on Zambia’s traditional attire, focusing on how these changes are manifested in the preferences, practices, and attitudes of individuals, particularly young people in educational institutions. Globalisation, urbanisation, and the proliferation of social media platforms have accelerated the adoption of modern fashion as a marker of social status, sophistication, and self-expression. Consequently, traditional dress, once a vital symbol of identity, cultural pride, and heritage, is gradually being overshadowed or relegated to ceremonial use. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through interviews, surveys, and focus group discussions in selected schools to understand the drivers of this cultural shift. The findings reveal that the appeal of modern fashion is fuelled by its association with global trends, affordability, and versatility, making it more attractive to the younger generation. At the same time, traditional attire is often viewed as outdated or impractical for daily use, which further contributes to its declining prominence. However, the study also identifies the potential to integrate traditional elements into modern designs, creating a fusion that preserves cultural identity while embracing contemporary aesthetics. Such an approach could promote cultural continuity and pride while addressing the evolving needs of a modernised society. The research highlights the importance of education and policy initiatives in promoting awareness of the cultural significance of traditional dress and encouraging innovative ways to sustain it in the face of modern influences. The study concludes by advocating a balanced approach that values the cultural heritage embedded in traditional dress while allowing for the creativity and individuality offered by modern fashion.
