Effect of Different Freezing Rates on Post-Thaw Semen Quality in Yak

A study was conducted on yak semen to evaluate the effect of different freezing rates on the quality of frozen semen. The semen was frozen following three freezing rates viz., Freezing rate I (@ 5ºC/minute from +4oC to -10oC, @ 40ºC/minute from -10ºC to -100ºC and @ 20ºC/minute from -100ºC to -140ºC), II (@ 4ºC/minute from +4ºC to -12ºC, @ 40ºC/minute from -12ºC to -40ºC and @ 50ºC/minute from -40ºC to -140ºC and III (@ 5oC/minute from +4ºC to -10ºC, @50ºC/minute from -10ºC to -100ºC and @ 20ºC/minute from -100oC to -140ºC). The sperm  motility, live sperm, HOST-reacted sperm, total incidence of acrosomal changes and  extracellular release of Alanine aminotransferase and Aspartate aminotransferase of yak semen extended in Tris extender differed significantly (P <0.01) between stages of processing and freezing but did not differ significantly between freezing rates and due to stage × freezing rate interaction. Analysis of variance revealed that in frozen semen, a freezing rate significantly (P<0.05) influenced the percentage of live sperm with Mitochondrial Membrane Potential (MMP) but did not significantly influence the percentage of sperm with DNA damage. The percentage of live sperm with MMP in frozen semen was significantly higher for freezing rate III than for freezing rate II but the difference between freezing rates I and III was not significant.

Genetic Variability in Flowering and Fruiting Behaviors of Litchi Varieties and Hybrids

An investigation was undertaken to study the variability in litchi hybrids developed at BAU, Sabour and their parents with respect to flowering and fruiting behavior. The experiment was carried out in Horticulture garden Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour. A critical analysis of the data for various characters of flowering and fruiting parameters like date of panicle initiation, duration of panicle emergence, flowering duration, flower colour, inflorescence shape and size, maturity period and fruit morphology were taken. Initiation of panicle emergence varied from 21/01/2013 (H-587, H-590) to 17/02/2013 (H-141, Kasba). Duration of anthesis varied from 25/02/2013 (H-517, H-574, H-598 & Early Bedana) to 12/03/2013 (H-70, H-104) and maturity period ranged from 55 to 68 days. Among different genoty [pes. H-73, H-98, H-104, H-510 had fruit shape oval to round similar to their male parent Bedana. Dark red fruit colour of H-70, H-73, H-104, H-566 also resembled Bedana i.e. their male parent. Significant genetic variability was found among the genotypes with respect to flowering characters, thus there is an ample scope for selection of promising genotypes. Thus from above finding it may be concluded that extended period of flowering, fruit set and harvesting span could be achieved through hybridization.

Test of Significance and Fiducial Limit of Voltage Stability Index for Indian 205 Bus System

Voltage delivery stability is frequently used to analyze power delivery systems. Under stressed condition, these indices denote the flexibility of voltage stability condition and predict the voltage collapse phenomenon by weak area clustering. The prediction of voltage collapse is very important for the smooth operation of power system, so that situation of voltage collapse could be avoided. For small transmission system, these indices work satisfactorily. In the present work, a large transmission system equivalent to 205 bus Indian transmission system has been examined. The Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI) proposed has been applying to test the system under consideration. Various aspects of power delivery system for example voltage profile, maximum load-ability limit, weakest bus and the different weak area clustering have been examined. Although the FVSI values obtained in the test result are capable of identifying the weak buses of the system, yet they vary in a non-linear manner i.e. for increasing values of load, the FVSI values first increase and then decrease.

Aloe vera Bio-Extract Coating Results Better Shelf Life and Fruit Quality Attributes in Pomegranate

Aims:  To evaluate the potentiality of bio-extract coatings for achieving extended shelf life with enhance fruit quality attributes in pomegranate under ambient storage condition. 

Study Design:  The lab experiment conducted in complete randomized design with three repetitions on Mridula cultivar of pomegranate.    

Place and Duration of Study:  The experiment was conducted during September 2016 at department of fruit science, Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, Haryana, India.

Methodology: Pomegranate freshly harvested fruits were coated with three bio-extracts coatings viz. Aloe vera (50,75 and 100%), ginger (1,2 and 3%) and mints (10,20 and 30%). The coated fruits were stored at ambient room condition in corrugated fiber board boxes for twelve days.  Periodically effects of bio-extract coatings, storage period and their interaction were observed for physiological loss in weight, decay loss, juice content, TSS: acid ratio, ascorbic acid content and anthocyanin content.   

Results: Surface coating with Aloe vera extract 100% was found most effective in reducing physiological loss in weight (50% less reduction as compared to untreated control) whereas ginger extract 3% in reducing the decay loss of fruits (9.65%) as compared to untreated control (23.36%). Among various treatments, the coating of pomegranate fruits with Aloe vera extract 100% resulted in lowest total soluble solids to acid ratio (32.17%) and significantly highest content of juice (47.17%), anthocyanin (13.98 mg/100 g) and ascorbic acid (12.82 mg/100 g) of the fruits along with highest organoleptic rating. The quality attributes viz. total soluble solids to acid ratio, anthocyanin of fruits increased with progression of storage period, while juice content and ascorbic acid decreased.

Conclusion: Bio-extract coating of Aloe vera (100%) substantially improved the shelf life with retaining better fruit quality attributes under ambient conditions and has the potential to substitute the prevalent chemical coatings for pomegranate.

Influence of Regional Weather Changes on Major Fruit Production and Productivity of Navsari District of Gujarat State, India

Horticulture is a priority sector in many states of India as it has potential to improving the socio economic condition of the farmers. Gujarat state is the fourth leading state in fruit production with 9% share at the national level. This study is conducted to correlate major weather parameters with the production of major fruit crops of Navsari district in Southern Gujarat. The study reveals that production and productivity of 4 major fruits (banana, mango, sapota and papaya) has moderate negative correlation with mean annual temperature (MAT) i.e > -50% except the productivity of land under banana. Whereas, it showed very weak negative and non significant relation with total annual Rainfall (TAR). Correlation of all four fruit production ranged between -34 to -53% and -0.7 to -62% for productivity with both MAT and TAR, respectively.

Socio-economic Characteristics and Their Correlation with the Knowledge Level of High Density Apple Growers of Kashmir Valley

The study was carried out in Bandipora, Baramulla, Kupwara, Pulwama and Shopian of the Kashmir valley owing to the majority of high density Apple growers in these districts. A total number of 200 respondents having high density apple orchards on an area of one 0.05 hectare and above were selected for the study. A well-structured interview schedule was constructed for the collection of primary data from the respondents. Data derived from the interviewees was analyzed by using suitable statistical methods. Socio-economic characteristics of the high density apple growers were studied and their relation with the Knowledge level of the respondents was found out. Out of a total of 330 high density apple growers, 200 respondents were selected for the present study through stratified random sampling procedure. Majority of the respondents were having medium knowledge level regarding the production technology in high density apple. Correlation analysis revealed that education, economic motivation, mass media exposure, scientific orientation and extension contacts had significant relationship with the knowledge level of the respondents whereas the rest of the independent variable like age, experience and landholding had non-significant relationship with the knowledge level of the respondents.

Correlation and Path Coefficient Analysis for Morphological and Biochemical Traits in Diverse Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) Genotypes

The present experiment was conducted to study the correlation and path coefficient analyses among some morphological and biochemical traits of twenty-three pomegranate genotypes. Results of correlation analysis showed a high, positive and statistically significant (at 0.1% P) correlation between fruit weight and fruit length (r= 0.897), peel weight (r=0.931), fruit volume (r= 0.67), fruit diameter (r=0.554) and total number of arils per fruit (r=0.428). Peel weight exerted direct positive effect as well indirect positive effect on fruit weight through characters like fruit volume, fruit length, total no. of arils per fruit, aril weight and fruit diameter while among the biochemical traits, fruit juiciness exerted maximum positive direct effect on TSS (0.298). The results suggested that these traits could be used for indirect selection of genotypes for higher yield and fruit quality traits will be suitable for cultivation as well as for use in breeding programme.

Review on Research and Developments of Sinks for Various Applications

In 21st century, kitchen sink is no longer a luxury for a house but has become a necessity. Human nowadays are pursuing for an advance kitchen sink with multiple function and ergonomic to the user. This work is a dedicated review on the design evolution of sinks from year 1973 till 2016. According to the patents review from year 1973, kitchen sink or faucet with multiple functions compiled with ergonomic features are invented and improved in its design from time to time. The patents discusses on the stand alone sink, portable basin that can be packed, use of flexible braided metal hose, sensor operated faucet, foldable kitchen sink and others design features which is crucial to the user. As part of an initiative to predict user needs in the future, future research on state of the art design and development of a smart ergonomic sink for home applications has been included in this work.
